Halogen-free cable exists because of what a fire does after the flame is out. PVC sheathing contains chlorine: burning it releases hydrogen chloride, which meets water vapour and becomes hydrochloric acid that attacks switchgear contacts, copper busbars, relay boards and the concrete around them, often causing more loss than the fire itself. It also produces dense smoke that removes visibility in an escape corridor within a minute. Replacing chlorine with a polyolefin compound loaded with aluminium or magnesium hydroxide removes both problems, at the cost of a stiffer compound that has to be extruded more carefully.
The three numbers to hold a supplier to are IEC 60754-1 acid gas, IEC 60754-2 pH and conductivity, and IEC 61034-2 smoke density measured as light transmittance. Flame spread is a separate test — IEC 60332-1 for a single cable and IEC 60332-3-22 to -24 for bunched installation — and a halogen-free cable does not automatically pass it. For cable placed on the EU market, EN 50575 adds a reaction-to-fire Euroclass that must be declared and CE marked.

WDZN-YJY-0.6/1kV
One cable for the two requirements that normally take two: circuit integrity and zero halogen.
Halogen-free describes the combustion products, not the fire behaviour. IEC 60754-1 measures the halogen acid gas evolved when a sample is burned in a tube furnace, expressed as mg/g of HCl, with a pass at not more than 5 mg/g. IEC 60754-2 measures the acidity of the gas dissolved in water — pH not below 4.3 and conductivity not above 10 µS/mm. Neither test lights the cable in a tray.
Flame spread is covered by IEC 60332. A halogen-free sheath can still propagate flame along a bundle if the compound is not formulated for it, which is why the specification should name both: halogen-free for smoke and acidity, plus IEC 60332-3-22, -23 or -24 category A, B or C for bunched flame spread. Voltcore states both sets of results per compound, and adds the GB/T 19666 class for projects following Chinese practice.
For cable sold into the European Union, EN 50575 classifies reaction to fire and the class must be declared with CE marking. Dca-s2,d2,a1 is the entry level normally accepted for general building installation. Cca-s1,d1,a1 is the usual requirement for hospitals, schools, hotels and transport hubs. B2ca-s1,d1,a1 is reserved for the highest-risk escape routes and is the hardest class to hold across a full size range.
The suffix carries as much information as the class letter. The s figure is smoke production, the d figure is flaming droplets and particles, and the a figure is acidity — a1 being the lowest acidity, which is what protects electronic equipment after a fire. Specify the full code, because B2ca-s1,d1,a1 and B2ca-s1,d0,a1 are different products and the difference appears only in the declaration of performance.
Fire alarm and emergency lighting circuits are limited by voltage drop rather than by current rating, because the conductors are small and the runs are long. An addressable loop at 1.5 mm² has a loop resistance of about 24 Ω/km, so a 300 m route drops several volts before any detector is considered. Voltcore recommends 2.5 mm² above 150 m and 4 mm² where the loop exceeds 300 m, and states the maximum DC resistance per size in the datasheet so the designer can check it.
The integrity duration has to match the evacuation strategy, not a habit. EN 50200 grades at PH30, PH60, PH90 and PH120; a 20-storey residential tower with phased evacuation needs PH90 or more, while a single-storey warehouse with immediate evacuation may justify PH30. Where BS standards are cited instead, BS 8434-2 covers the 120-minute submission for cables of 20 mm overall diameter or less.
Include cross-section, core count, voltage grade, route length and installation method — those five determine price more than anything else on the page.
