Cables for Commercial and Residential Construction

Risers and life safety circuits specified for the evacuation plan

Voltcore supplies halogen-free distribution, fire rated mineral insulated and fire alarm cable for towers, hotels, hospitals and housing projects.

Building services cabling is unusual in that the dominant requirement is what happens under fault rather than under normal load. Smoke density and halogen acid gas release decide whether occupants can see an exit and whether switchgear in an adjacent room survives the incident, so the reaction-to-fire class and the circuit integrity requirement govern the specification before conductor size is even considered. Modern loads complicate the picture further: LED lighting, lift drives, data centre racks and EV chargers all produce harmonic current that raises neutral conductor temperature in a three-phase distribution board sized on the assumption of a balanced load.

Voltcore Cable has produced building and construction cable from Yixing, Jiangsu since 2008, with 32 lines covering low smoke halogen-free constructions, fire rated designs and standard building wire variants. Certifications held include ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 45001, CE marking to CPR EN 50575 for construction products placed in the European market, plus RoHS and REACH compliance. Contractors normally take riser sub-mains, distribution tails, fire alarm circuit cable and emergency lighting supply together, which Voltcore supplies cut to length against the riser schedule from Shanghai or Ningbo.

What actually destroys cable here

Smoke and acid gas under fire

Halogenated sheaths release hydrogen chloride when they burn, which corrodes contacts in adjacent panels and reduces visibility in escape routes. Low smoke halogen-free compounds limit both, and for enclosed public buildings that difference is the whole point of the specification rather than a nice-to-have.

Circuit integrity during evacuation

Fire pumps, smoke extract fans, emergency lighting and fireman's lifts must keep running while the building is burning. Copper sheath mineral insulated cable provides inherent circuit integrity at temperatures above 900 °C, which is why life safety circuits are designed from the fire strategy backwards.

Harmonic loading from modern equipment

Switch-mode power supplies throughout the building generate third harmonic current that adds in the neutral rather than cancelling. A board loaded with LED fixtures, IT equipment and lift drives can carry neutral current at or above phase current, which changes both conductor sizing and termination practice.

Riser movement and vertical support

Long vertical drops need armoured or clamped constructions that carry their own weight at intervals, and every support point must spread load without deforming the sheath. Fire stopping compounds also have to remain chemically compatible with the jacket over decades of contact.

Site handling and pulling conditions

Cable arrives months before the building is weatherproof and is often pulled through partially finished shafts. Scratch resistance, minimum bending radius during installation and clear drum marking matter more on site than almost any laboratory property.

Specification points buyers most often get wrong

  • Fix the reaction-to-fire class first. For any cable in scope of CPR EN 50575 in the European market, the declared class determines what may legally be installed, and it should be settled before any pricing comparisons are made.
  • Separate the two different requirements that people conflate: resistance to flame spread and smoke emission versus circuit integrity during a fire. A halogen-free cable is not automatically fire survivable.
  • Size neutral conductors against real harmonic loading from LED lighting, lift drives and IT equipment rather than assuming balance, especially on the parent circuits feeding those loads.
  • Plan risers for weight support and joint avoidance. Flexible mineral insulated types give long uninterrupted lengths where a continuous penetration through many floors would otherwise need intermediate boxes.
  • Check the compatibility of fire stopping and cleat materials with the sheath compound. Incompatible mastics soften some jacketing materials over time.
  • Specify drum lengths against the riser schedule and request sequential length marking, so site teams can cut to each floor without re-measuring.
  • Decide early where standard PVC building wire is acceptable and where halogen-free is mandatory, since mixing them in one schedule creates confusion during inspection.

Specification examples

Situation

A mixed-use tower with two basement levels required distribution from the ground floor substation to consumer units on every floor, plus supplies to smoke extract plant on the roof.

What was specified

Sub-mains were specified in low smoke halogen-free XLPE power cable with aluminium options reviewed for the longest runs, while the smoke extract and pressurisation fan supplies were specified in fire resistant multi-core cable with copper sheath alternatives for the hottest zone. Voltcore cut lengths to the riser schedule and marked each drum with floor destination, which removed cutting waste on site.

Situation

A hospital extension needed options for the theatre block emergency lighting distribution without interrupting the existing building supply during installation.

What was specified

Voltcore supplied halogen-free fire resistant and emergency lighting circuit constructions alongside screened control pairs for the generator changeover logic, all delivered in one shipment from Ningbo. Free sample lengths of up to 5 m were sent first so the consultant could confirm the sheath marking and colour coding before the bulk order was released.

Examples are illustrative; project references and documentation available on request.

Commercial & Residential Construction Cables — frequently asked questions

What is the difference between low smoke halogen-free and fire rated cable?

Low smoke halogen-free describes what happens when the cable burns: limited smoke and no halogen acid gas. Fire rated describes circuit integrity, meaning the cable must continue supplying equipment while exposed to fire. Many projects need both properties at once, which is why constructions combining halogen-free compounds with mica fire barrier tapes exist alongside copper sheathed mineral insulated types.

Are your construction cables CE marked to CPR EN 50575?

Voltcore holds CE marking to CPR EN 50575 for cable constructions placed in the European market, supported by ISO 9001 quality management along with ISO 14001 and ISO 45001. RoHS and REACH compliance documentation is also available. Please state the required reaction-to-fire class at enquiry stage so the correct declared performance is quoted.

Do we need to oversize the neutral conductor for modern buildings?

Frequently yes, if a circuit feeds predominantly switch-mode loads. LED fixtures, IT equipment and lift drives generate third harmonic current that adds arithmetically in the neutral conductor. Where such loads are a large share of the board, specifying an equal-size or enlarged neutral avoids overheating at terminations, which is the usual failure point rather than the conductor itself.

Can you supply per-floor cut lengths?

Yes. Cut-to-length production against a riser schedule is one of the most requested services for building projects, together with private label drum marking showing floor, riser and circuit reference. MOQ is 500 m per size, with lead time of 15–25 working days and shipment from Shanghai or Ningbo.
