EV-T2-M3-EN62196
Type 2 Mode 3 EV Charging Cable to EN 62196-2
A mode 3 charging lead built around the EN 62196-2 interface, in 16 A to 63 A three-phase and single-phase configurations.
A mode 3 charging cable is specified from the connector backwards. EN 62196-2 fixes the vehicle and supply-side interface, and the cable has to match it in conductor count, cross-section and sheath diameter so the gland grips and the strain relief works. Three-phase charging at 32 A needs five power conductors, one of them the protective earth, and the assembly still has to be light enough for a driver to coil after every use.
The electrical figure that governs the size is the current, not the voltage: 16 A three-phase normally lands on 5G2.5 mm² and 32 A three-phase on 5G6 mm². Voltcore lays the cores up with a non-woven binder, screens the signalling pair where the design calls for it, and jackets the assembly in TPU so the sheath stays flexible in a cold car park and resists the oil and road salt a public charge point collects.

Engineering characteristics
- Built to the EN 62196-2 Type 2 interface, so the connector gland and strain relief fit without modification.
- 16 A to 63 A configurations in one construction family, from 5G2.5 mm² up to 5G16 mm².
- TPU sheath stays flexible at −30 °C and resists oil, road salt and the abrasion of a concrete floor.
- Class 5 stranding to IEC 60228 gives the bend life a hand-held charging lead needs over thousands of coils.
- Non-woven binder holds the five-core assembly round, which is what keeps the gland sealing evenly.
- Protective earth carried at the same cross-section as the phases up to 16 mm², per the interface requirement.
- Voltage tested at 2.5 kV AC for 5 min on the power cores before the assembly leaves the line.

Type 2 Mode 3 EV Charging Cable (EN 62196-2) — frequently asked questions
Which configuration do I need: 3-core or 5-core?
It follows the supply. Single-phase charging up to 32 A uses three conductors — phase, neutral and protective earth — so 3G6 mm² for 32 A. Three-phase charging uses five: three phases, neutral and earth, so 5G2.5 mm² at 16 A and 5G6 mm² at 32 A. Send the connector pin-out and the supply arrangement and Voltcore will match the construction.
Can this cable be used outdoors permanently?
Yes, with the TPU sheath. TPU holds its flexibility down to −30 °C and resists UV, oil and hydrolysis, which is what a permanently installed outdoor charge point needs. The TPE-sheathed version is intended for portable leads that spend most of their life in a boot. Both meet IEC 60332-1-2 for flame behaviour.
Is 2.5 mm² enough for a 32 A charge point?
Not for three-phase 32 A. In a five-core bundle at 40 °C ambient, 2.5 mm² carries about 20 A, so a 32 A point needs 6 mm². The 2.5 mm² size is for 16 A three-phase or for the short 32 A single-phase leads where the arrangement is 3G6 mm² anyway. Undersizing shows up as heat at the connector, which is where the warranty claim starts.
Do you supply terminated leads as well as bulk cable?
Both. Voltcore supplies bulk cable on drums for charge point assemblers, and cut lengths terminated with Type 2 vehicle and infrastructure connectors including the moulded grip. The proximity resistor in the vehicle connector is set to match the cable's own current rating, which is the point the vehicle reads before it draws power.
