Illustrative cross section. Construction layers listed below.

A photovoltaic cable has to survive heat, sunlight and DC voltage at the same time, which is why EN 50618 requires two separate walls rather than one. The inner wall is the insulation over the conductor; the outer wall is the sheath that takes the sun, the gravel and the pulling tension. Both are electron-beam cross-linked, so a cable that sits at +90 °C all afternoon does not soften, and a short circuit that takes the conductor to 250 °C for 5 s does not melt either wall through.

Voltcore builds this construction in 1.5 mm² to 35 mm² on flexible tinned Class 5 copper to IEC 60228. The tinning is not decoration: it stops the galvanic corrosion that untreated copper suffers where a humid junction box meets a dissimilar metal connector. Voltcore holds TÜV Rheinland type approval for this PV cable, and the licence reference is printed on the sheath alongside the size and the metre mark so a site inspector can verify the mark without opening the drum.

Engineering characteristics

  • TÜV Rheinland type approved for PV service, with the licence reference printed on the sheath and supplied with the quotation.
  • Two cross-linked walls — insulation 0.7–1.2 mm plus sheath 0.8–1.1 mm — instead of the single wall a 1 kV DC cable is allowed.
  • Conductor rated +90 °C continuously and held at 120 °C for 20 000 h in the EN 50618 thermal endurance test.
  • Tinned Class 5 strands resist the galvanic corrosion plain copper suffers at a damp MC4 connector or junction box.
  • Lays flat and stays installable down to −40 °C, so a winter rooftop pull does not need the drums warmed first.
  • Short-circuit rating of 250 °C for 5 s at the conductor, which keeps the walls intact through an array fault.
  • DC resistance tabulated per size, which is what the voltage-drop calculation for a 1500 V string actually needs.

Typical applications

  • Module-to-module string wiring on rooftop and ground-mount arrays
  • DC home-run from the combiner box to the string inverter
  • Pre-terminated jumpers with MC4-compatible connectors fitted at both ends
  • Tracker and floating PV where the cable flexes with the structure every day
  • Agrivoltaic and solar carport runs that stay in direct sun all year
  • Replacement DC wiring on existing arrays where the original sheath has chalked

Ordering options

  • 4 mm² and 6 mm² cut to exact string length with MC4-compatible connectors fitted
  • Black, red or blue sheath; black remains the default for UV duty
  • Tinned or plain copper Class 5 conductor
  • 100 m, 250 m, 500 m and 1000 m wooden drums, or 100 m coils
  • Private-label sheath printing and drum labels under OEM or ODM supply

PV1-F / H1Z2Z2-K Solar Photovoltaic Cable — frequently asked questions

Is H1Z2Z2-K the same cable as PV1-F?

The construction is the same: tinned Class 5 conductor, two cross-linked halogen-free walls. The difference is the voltage the design was type tested at and the code used on the drum. PV1-F is the designation for 1.0 kV DC work under EN 50618. H1Z2Z2-K is the harmonised code for 1.5 kV DC, used on 1500 V arrays. Voltcore supplies both in 1.5–35 mm² and prints the code the project needs.

How long will the sheath really last on a rooftop?

EN 50618 proves the claim rather than asserting it: the compound is held at 120 °C for 20 000 h, then pulled and bent, and separately exposed to UV and ozone. That is the basis for a 25-year outdoor life. In the field, the things that shorten it are mechanical damage during pulling and sharp edges on the mounting rail, which is why the two-wall construction and correct clipping matter as much as the compound.

Can I use 4 mm² for a 1500 V string?

Usually yes for short runs, but decide it with a voltage-drop calculation, not by cross-section alone. At +90 °C, 4 mm² is about 6.8 Ω/km loop; a 60 m string at 10 A loses roughly 4 V, which is under 0.3% of 1500 V. Long runs or high-current modules push you to 6 mm². Send the string length and the module Imp and Voltcore will size it.

Do you hold TÜV certification for this cable?

Yes. Voltcore holds TÜV Rheinland type approval covering the PV cable range, and the licence reference is printed on the sheath and given with the quotation. TÜV coverage applies to the solar PV cable. Other products in the catalogue carry their own marks: UL listing on building wire, and CE marking to CPR EN 50575 where that applies.
