YJY-0.6-1kV
YJY Cable — XLPE Insulated, Polyethylene Sheathed 0.6/1 kV Power Cable
A polyethylene oversheath instead of PVC: halogen-free, near-zero water transmission, and available as a tested LSZH construction.
YJY keeps the XLPE insulation of YJV and swaps the outermost jacket from PVC to polyethylene. Nothing changes electrically — same 90 °C conductor rating, same 250 °C short-circuit limit, identical current tables — but the thermodynamic and chemical behaviour of the sheath does. Polyethylene transmits water vapour at a small fraction of the PVC rate and contains no chlorine, so its combustion products are far less acidic when it does eventually burn.
Voltcore takes the low-smoke requirement further with WDZ-YJY, where the oversheath is a compounded halogen-free material tested to IEC 60754-1 (pH above 4.3, conductivity below 10 µS/mm) and IEC 61034-2 (light transmittance above 60 %). Note honestly that a plain PE sheath alone is not automatically flame-retardant; unless the enquiry states LSZH, we quote the PE compound and flag it. Buyers should also expect a stiffer pull: raise pulling radii and use a swivel where the route turns more than 90 degrees.

Engineering characteristics
- Polyethylene oversheath transmits water vapour at less than one tenth of the PVC rate, which protects the insulation on permanently wet duct routes.
- No chlorine in the sheath chemistry: LSZH grades emit below 5 mg/g halogen acid gas to IEC 60754-1, protecting switchgear contacts downstream of a fire.
- Smoke opacity measured above 60 % light transmittance to IEC 61034-2, sufficient for metro tunnel and station evacuation requirements.
- Full 90 °C continuous and 250 °C short-circuit conductor ratings retained, so no de-rating relative to YJV.
- Higher surface hardness than PVC by roughly 10 Shore D points, reducing damage in multi-cable pulls through rough ducts.
- Lower friction coefficient once lubricated, though the jacket is stiffer cold; pull above 0 °C and use generous sheave radii.
- Available with water-swellable tapes beneath the sheath for routes classified as permanently wet in BS EN 50525 equivalents.
Typical applications
- Metro and rail tunnels, stations and underground concourses with evacuation smoke limits
- Data centre main distribution where halogen acid would corrode server hardware
- Hospital and airport terminal LV distribution with occupied evacuation routes
- Wet duct banks, below-water-table basements and river-crossing conduits
- Chemical and pharmaceutical plants sensitive to corrosive fire effluent
- High-rise risers where low-smoke performance is written into the building specification

YJY XLPE Insulated PE Sheathed Low Smoke Power Cable — frequently asked questions
Is every YJY cable halogen-free and low smoke?
No, and the distinction matters in tenders. Standard YJY has a plain polyethylene oversheath, which is halogen-free in chemistry but not compounded to resist flame propagation. When the specification calls for low smoke and IEC 60332-3 behaviour, order WDZ-YJY, which we type-test to IEC 60754-1 and IEC 61034-2 and supply with reports.
Why would I choose YJY over the cheaper YJV?
For the sheath environment, not for electrical capacity. Both carry identical 90 °C ratings. YJY wins where the duct is permanently wet, where acidic smoke from PVC would damage switchgear or electronics, or where the project specification bans halogenated material. YJV remains the sensible buy on dry indoor tray work.
Is the PE sheath harder to pull than PVC?
Yes. Polyethylene is stiffer and scores more easily against a sharp duct lip. Voltcore recommends larger sheave and bend radii, a pulling swivel on every turn above 90 degrees, and installing above 0 °C. Lubricant compatible with polyolefin should be used; some PVC-specific lubricants cause stress cracking.
Which CPR reaction-to-fire class can you supply for YJY?
Standard offers cover Dca-s2,d2,a1. Where the design requires more, Voltcore supplies B2ca or Cca classified constructions under EN 50575 with the declaration of performance document, tested through our notified-body route for CE marking into the EU.
